Our Programs
English Language Arts
PS/MS 4 is a social justice and community activism school, all of our English Language Arts curriculum is based on four social justice domains of ‘Identity, Diversity, Justice and Activism.’ Students learn through a variety of carefully curated texts and media that embody the diversity that exists in their community and other communities around the world. Students get to discern the messages authors are trying to convey in their texts. This leads to students developing their voices and engaging in robust discussions on a myriad of social justice issues.

Mathematics
Students at PS/MS 4 undergo a developmental approach to learning mathematics. We utilize visuals and concrete manipulatives for our younger students so they develop a good sense of number numeracy and one to one correspondence. As students gain conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts they engage in problem solving. It is important for students to demonstrate a variety of mathematical strategies for solving problems. These problems are also anchored in social justice issues so students can find solutions for these real world situations.
Science
Our science program is a marriage between scientific inquiry, concepts and hands-on learning. It is important for students to explore the physical and natural sciences within this world. This is done through engaging in experiments utilizing observations, conjectures, questioning and putting a plan into action.

Social Studies
Our social studies curriculum is anchored in social justice as we teach multiple perspectives and historical experiences that people of marginalized communities have faced historically. We teach our students that we stand on the shoulders of these experiences and their voices matter. Social studies is done through project based learning, students create posters, PSA, informational pamphlets, etc.
Physical Education
All of our students engage in physical activity, this is pivotal to the development of team building, leadership skills and overall physical fitness. Students get to participate in many units of study as part of our physical education curriculum to include basketball, soccer, balance, team work, etc. Students take the role of giving each other and their teammates feedback so they can work on a goal to improve their overall physical performance and health.

Social Emotional Learning & Mindfulness
Our students engage in weekly lessons for social emotional learning within their classrooms based on self awareness, social awareness, and emotion regulation. These strategies help our students to name their feelings, manage their emotions and apply conflict resolution strategies. In addition to these lessons, PS/MS 4 have two mindfulness rooms that students attend in small groups to receive lessons by our guidance counselors. The lesson focuses on yoga, stretching, breathing and just being mindful in the moment and space.
